- THE PRESS RELEASE -

Longer than a PSA, a press release provides media with more detailed information. It is written with the “hook” or story angle in the first paragraph. Important information on the event should also be listed (where the event is being held, when the event is being held, why the event is being held, who is holding the event and how people can get more information).

Press Releases can be emailed out, faxed or mailed. Most media are now used to getting emailed releases and this is the most time and cost effective. However, provide media with enough time to respond and assign a reporter if they are interested.

Other things to keep in mind is the different needs of the media. What visuals are available at the event for television or if the paper wants to send a photographer? What audio is available for radio? Who will be the main spokesperson for the media and are they well informed?

Keep your messages simple – and think of three key things you would like the public to know about your event, don’t try and barrage the media with too much information.
